The ITEM Paradigm
Overview

General Statement
This psychosocial program utilizes a survey questionnaire and group facilitation process to develop the capacity to quantify and measure changes in Life Configuration Patterns (LCP) and provide statistical input for continuing research

History and Intention
The assessment study is a result of collaboration with Landmark Education and health care professionals and researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; UPMC.
Over the past three years; discussions have been held with a variety of health care and wellness practitioners. Professionals contacted have included medical, mental health, bodywork therapist, wellness educators, life change facilitators, motivational speakers and intuitive and spiritual consultants.
A common theme throughout the group is sensitivity to holistic oriented techniques and therapies. Additionally these skilled practitioners have personally and professionally experienced the value of an integrated medical approach in a health care delivery system.

About HLQ: Organized Summer 1980
Our focus is whole-life living and we support interactive education, group facilitation, networking and research activities. We seek to encourage cooperation among similar organizations and to communicate holistic concepts to our members, the general public and the media.
Our educational mission is to be a catalyst for individual growth and to promote certificate, certification, and degree programs related to holistic living in educational institutions of all levels, from primary to Ph.D.
Our community outreach vision includes techniques, technologies and forums that provide a full range of interactive educational and experiential learning and unlearning opportunities.
Careers and interest in Holistic Living are increasing. Presently, there are three segments of this growing market:
o Individuals motivated to improve and enhance treatment possibilities, healing and personal wellbeing.
o Practitioners motivated to dialogue with clients interested in whole life living.
o Persons excited by the potential of holistic living oriented career opportunities.

Dialogue to Encourage Collaboration:
Selected Questions and Challenges Our Assessment Study Will Address:
Is ITEM an effective method for lowering health care cost?
Can patients be a partner in the health care delivery system and assume a degree of personal responsibility in relationship to their illness?
Can ITEM improve patient’s sense of wellbeing and facilitate the healing process?
Can precise ITEM programming be developed that targets specific illnesses and diseases?
Can a supportive environment be created to support personal transformation?

Why Are These Question/Problems Important To Address?
Health care costs are soaring and we continue to invest in high cost medications, surgical techniques, diagnostic procedures and reliance on medical specialists to provide health care answers.
Our unique approach tests the effectiveness of facilitated therapeutic group awareness which encourages patients to assume a degree of personal responsibility for their health and actively participate in the treatment of their illness.
One area of investigation is the costs of re-cycling of illness patterns and chronic disease and the potential cost saving impact of the utilization of therapeutic group facilitation?

What Makes This Assessment Study Unique?
As with most psychosocial modalities the ITEM model provides a supportive environment and a cognitive reframing process.
Additionally the ITEM model includes an interviewing and group facilitation process where participants engage in experiential learning and unlearning as they target changes in their life configuration patterns. The LCP are measured, assessed and monitored throughout the program and utilized in additional investigative analysis.

Our Accomplishment Goals:
What Will We Accomplish - How Will We Measure Success
Our intent is to develop quantitative criteria for Life Configuration Patterns. These measurements provide a means to test the effectiveness of the Integrated Therapeutic Education Model (ITEM) and to correlate these finding to new or acute illness(es), flare up of acute illness(es); and the utilization of health care and wellness services and self care products and techniques.
As measurability and predictability of Life Configuration Patterns increase we will develop specific protocol regimens to target selected personality characteristics, unique medical diagnoses and specific illness and disease categories.

Why Is There A Good Chance Of Achieving Our Goals?
There is a great body of evidence-based research supporting the effectiveness of disciplines in the emerging field of Integrative Medicine. The Preventive Medicine Research Institute headed by Dr. Dean Ornish has directed clinical research for nearly 30 years demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease.
In the psychosocial realm there are years of research supporting the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Family Focused Therapy (FFT), and Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT).
Our investigative and advisory team has extensive experience in the disciplines of wellness education, change facilitation, and complimentary and integrative medicine techniques.

The ITEM Paradigm
Research Question
Can The Survey Instrument and Life Configuration Patterns serve as quantifiable predictors for the reduction of health care cost and the treatment and prevention of periodic illness and chronic disease?
Can The ITEM Intervention Model which includes: group facilitation, experiential learning and transformational change programming be a catalyst for the reduction of health care cost and the treatment and prevention of periodic illness and chronic disease?
